Because of the open-source of those CMS, developers are adding more functionality and features to WordPress every day. It really is an incredible platform!
It is designed with beginner in mind.

The WordPress platofrm is incredibly robust and powerful, with tons of great features. If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to contact me. I will be happy to help!

P.S. Don’t download/install WordPress yet, you’ll first need a domain name and a web hosting service to store your website files (this will be explained in next step).

STEP #2: Register a Domain and Web Hosting Service
Before you download WordPress, you will need to get a Doman and a web hosting services. You must get both before creating a new website.

What is a Domain.
Domain name is what people use to find your website on the internet. You can’t have a website without a domain name. Like your street address that tells people where you live, a domain name helps customers to your website.
Example: Facebook’s domain is FACEBOOK.COM

What is Web Hosting Service
Next essential item on your list is to sign up with a web hosting service provider.
Web Hosting is the service of uploading and maintenance your website onto the World Wide Web.
Web hosting service provider can give you the back-end support of storing all your website’s files, content and data in their server. They also provide you the front-end service of displaying the content of your website to your visitors all over the world.
Additional service such as cyber security, backup storage, quick load time are also available depend on the web hosting provider you choose.

Where do I get a domain name and hosting?
I been in this business for almost 10 years. I came across many domain vendor or web hosting providers.
I recommend BlueHost. They are very afforadalbe, and offers a very user-friendly platform, which are good features for beginner in online business.
Trust me on this one. It saves you lots of time and money later.
If you signup with BlueHost for web hosting, they will also give you a domain name for free. Wow!
They also offer a 1-click installation for WordPress. Trust me, this will save you a lot of time later.
For myself, I mostly use Bluehos as a web hosting and domain registrar for myself and for my clients.
After registration,  your hosting account will gets activated almost immediately. This means you website will become LIVE on the World Wide Web. Now … you can start creating your website :).

SEOHAWKONLINE can get a discount by clicking here ($3.95/mo + free domain name). You will also get a email account(s) from your web hosting account, with your domain name. This way you will sound more professional. By the way, they also offers money back guarentee, so there is no harm in giving them a try!
Also, because I use BlueHost, therefore all the tutorials, step-by-step procedures and screnshots are done with BlueHost.
You can definitely try other web hosting providers, but they just don’t have the benefit Bluehost does. You can also try to host your website yourself, but the process is really difficult and the home-brewed server may not handle too many visitors, or meet WordPress’s minimum requirement.
For a few bucks a month on a professional hosting service, I say that is a good deal.

What kind of domain name should I pick?

If you’ve decided to go with Bluehost, you’ll have an option to pick a free domain name. Otherwise, you will need to sign up with a separate domain name provider such as GoDaddy.com.

Therefore, why not save youself some trouble and money, just sign up with BlueHost and get your free domain all with one company.

Choose a domain name for your website

Needless to say, domain name needs to reflect your company name or your brand name.
Most of the domain names end with .com, .ca, .edu, .net.
There are a few things that can help you choose your domain name:

1. Reflect your business or your brand.
2. Make it short and memorable.
3. Avoid numbers and hyphens
4. Use KeyWords
5. Use appropriate domain name extension
6. Act fast.

STEP #3: Launch your website
After you got your domain name and your web hosting, now your website is up and running.
Installing WordPress

With bluehost, there have a one-click installation button, so that you can easilly install WordPress onto your site.
Almost every reliable and web hosting provider has integrated 1-click-installation for WordPress, which makes our lives much easier. You should find your “1-click-installation” in the account control panel.
1. Log in to your Bluehost cPanel account.
2. Find the Website section and select Install WordPress.
3. Click the Install button.
4. If necessary, you can edit the email address, username and password for the new WordPress installation. Click “advanced options” and you can change those settings.
5. Read through the license and service agreements and check the boxes
6. Select the Install Now button.
Shoot me an email if you still can’t find it.

Now you need a theme, or else your website will look like a white piece of paper.
A template is your website’s front-end design and layout. It is your website’s presentation to your online visitors.
Here’s how to find a theme you like:

2. Access FREE themes

Once you’re in the dashboard, you can access to over a thousand free themes in the WordPress
On the left side bar of the dashboard, click on Appearance, then click Themes.
If you are not satisfy, you can purchase for professional boutique theme developer such as Evitco. They have thousands of professionally designed theme to chose from. Weather your site is for blogging, e-commerce, affiliate marketing, Evatico got a theme for you at a reasonable price.

After you found a theme you desire, click on the Install button for the theme you choose. Once installed, click on the Activate button.

At this point, you have laid down the foundation of your website. From now on, you have to keep adding high quality contents and features to your website to attract visitors.
Besides creating good content, you also need to work on your marketing. There are many way to grow your website’s client base and traffic. I will create a separate post to discuss each strategy in detail.

XML Sitemap and Why Sitemap can Improve Your SEO

What is the use of sitemap in SEO?

Sitemap is basically a general outline of your website optimized for the crawling Googlebot.
Sitemap is simply a list of individual webpage’s URLs and details of each webpage. It is directory of the URL for every page and post in your website, listed in a logical hierarchical order.
There are 9 types of sitemap formats that are currently supported by Google Webmaster Tools. Each format provide distinctive benefits and they would make the website great if all formats are implemented cohesively. For example, HTML sitemap is designed for the front-end user experience. It help them navigate through your site conveniently. On the other hand, the Visual sitemap is used as planning or project management tool that will help webmaster to organize the contents to be included on the website.
There is also the eXtensible Markup Language (XML) format, it is a standard machine readable format consumable by search engines and other feed readers. Although there are so many formats you can build your sitemap with, but we recommend you start with XML, because XML Sitemap is the preferred Sitemap format for search engine submission.

How Can Sitemap Improve Your SEO
This Sitemap should be easily discoverable in order for search engine crawlers like Googlebot, to crawl it. If bots can’t crawl it, then it won’t be indexed. While crawling a sitemap, the bot will find and information applicable to a specific search query that has been performed. These information will be sent back to the database for indexing purposes.
XML Sitemap can facilitates the website creator in feeding specific information about the pages to be crawled by the crawlers. XML sitemap has unique structure and can’t be seen by end user. They do, however, convey information to the search engines, on what the content of the web page is about, how often is the update, and how a specific page relates to others.
XML Sitemap is critical for SEO, because it makes it easier for Googlebot to crawl your site thoroughly and collect the information they need. Remember, for Google or any other search engines, all the pages in your website are ranked, not just the website in general.

How to Create a XML Sitemap for Your Website
There are hundreds of way to create a XML Sitemap. Over here, I will just described how to leverage off your existing WordPress Yoast SEO Plugin.
Be sure to installed and activated the essential Yoast SEO Plugin if you haven’t done so already. Not only it can assist you with you on-site SEO, this wonderful little plugin can help you generate a sitemap in XML format as well.
In your WordPress Dashboard, go to SEO on the left sidebar.
Select Dashboard > Feature tab
At Advanced Settings, click on Enabled.
Now, click SEO on the sidebar again, select XML Sitemaps.
Enabled the XML Sitemap Functionality on the top.
Here, you should enter the required information about your website, then your XML sitemap will be generated very shortly.
Other Sitemap creator are available online or in the plugin store, check out XML Generator, it is free as well.
Next Step is the Search Engine Submission!

How to submit your Sitemap to the Search Engine (Google, Bing, Yahoo)
Google Sitemap Generator can help you do this job easily as well.
To submit your sitemap:
1. Select your site on your Google Search Console home page.
2. Click Crawl.
3. Click Sitemaps.
4. Click ADD/TEST SITEMAP.
5. Type sitemap.xml.
6. Click Submit Sitemap.

Be sure to set up your website with Google Search Console if you do not already have one. Next, go to Google’s web page for URL submitting, type in your URL, type in the message that ensures Google you are an individual not a software robot and click “add URL.” This process can be done pretty quickly and easily.
Sitemap is also useful because it can help the website creator with the site’s structural and navigational design. Yes, creating a sitemap does take time and effort, but it is a good investment. If the bot can’t crawl a page in your site, then that page will not get indexed, and thus its content will not be ranked in search engines. The result of this would be no traffic, no view, no revenue.

Top 10 Features to Consider When You Choose A Web Hosting Service Provider

Creating a website is a lot of work. Choosing a good web hosting company can improve your SEO ranking and even help you drives more sales. After you figure out the domain name, the next step is to sign up for a web hosting service provider. For a beginner, selecting the right hosting service can be a headache. Don’t worry, I will guide you and help you find a web hosting service that best fits your website’s needs.
For a new website with traffic less than 20000 visitor per day, shared hosting may be the ideal hosting option to start with. There are other hosting package option such as VPS or dedicated hosting service, which mean the entire hosting provider will dedicated their resource to your website. Maybe that will happen to your website eventually, but we all got to start somewhere small.
Before you shop around for a hosting provider, first figure out what feature you are looking from your hosting service. Normally, user should consider for unlimited hosting (bandwidth + storage), email, domain name, price, support, reliability and etc. Therefore, do your due diligence carefully because the quality of the hosting service could affect your SEO ranking and your user’s experience.

Here are the Top 10 Features to Consider When You Choose A Web Hosting Service Provider
1. Price
Price is important, but don’t let it be your biggest deciding factor. If your business reply on your website, you should spend the few extra dollars per month on a better hosting package. It is a good investment. When you see hosting provider that charges only $0.99/month, I doubt they would have the latest hardware or technology, or 24 hour in-house customer service. Therefore, you should not aim for the cheapest provider, but look for the best web hosting service for your budget.
If you see any web hosting service that offer free trial or free hosting forever. I seriously don’t recommend it. Those hosting companies probably will make their money back from advertising revenue, which will disrupt your website’s operation with annoying pop-ups that will irritate your visitors. This will reflect poorly on your website’s reputation.

2. Security and Backup
Web security is obviously a top priority for most website creators, especially if you site is in ecommerce and handles customer credit card information. When your site is down, you could lose business and reputation. If hackers installed a malware on your site, it can infect your visitor’s computer.
Good hosting companies should have PCI/DSS and SSL encryption. 256 bits encryption will be the standard in 2018. If your hosting company only offers 128 bits or lower, hackers can easily identify a weak spot and take advantage of your website’s security vulnerability. Therefore, you need to do your due diligence on the hosting company’s reputation and technical capability. You want company who take proactive steps to ensure the security of their clients’ website is a high priority.
In this industry, since technology becomes obsolete very quickly. Make sure to pick a web hosting service that are continuously invested in the latest security hardware or software, to make your you website is fully secured at all time.
Key feature to look for is automatic regular backups and a simple one-click restore.
Getting all your information backed up every single day is preferred. In this case, if your website is compromised, you can get back pretty much all the information easily.

3. Customer Service and Technical Support
There will always be unforeseen problem, so don’t compromise customer service in order to get a lower hosting fee. Think about the potential loss of income if you can’t get the help you need quick enough.
Customer service or technical support are very important, even more so for beginner in building a website. Ideally, you want to be able to talk to a real person 24/7. But such service isn’t cheap. Some providers offer it, but charge a premium. While other providers outsourced this service offshore. However, there are some provider such as BlueHost or HostGator, they provide you with multiple levels of in-house support via, phone, email and live chat, all free, 24/7. Therefore, when it comes to support, make sure your hosting company is one that value customer support dearly
4. Control Panel and User Interface
I am sure you won’t want to deal with a confusing interface. You definitely don’t have the time to call customer support all the time for guidance. You should sign up with a hosing company that let you easily install WordPress with 1-click. Browse through a hosting company’s website, get a fee of what their interface is like. Over the years, I would say BlueHost offer one of the most robust, powerful and user-friendly interface in the industry. I would highly recommend this one.

5. Email Features
Check out what email features the hosting company provide. Do they offer spam protection? Is your website protected from malware and virus?

6. Storage and bandwidth
Bandwidth determines how fast your website downloads and uploads data. The amount of storage space you need depends on the total size of all the files (text, image, videos) you plan to put onto your website. If your website has lots of HD videos or a large inventory of goods, be sure to get more storage space. Since WordPress takes up lot of memory, finding a web hosting provider that offer great speed is even more important.
Most web hosting company have more premium servicing package that can offer you additional bandwidth or data storage space. This is a nice feature for website that outgrow their original basic plan.

8. Reliability
Reliability or uptime should be crucial deciding factor for your website. It is more important for a business website, since any downtime will hurt your earning potential.
Any claims of 100% uptime are very unlikely. There could be unforeseen circumstance or a scheduled maintenance that took your website offline for a short period.
Look into their past performance history, all established hosting company should make this information available.

9. Company Stability
Look for a company with an established reputation in this industry. Many web hosting companies comes and goes. In this industry, there are many smaller reseller that bought bulk service from a major hosting provider, then resell to individual clients. This kind of company could disappear over-night.
Make sure to pick a provider that is most likely to stay in the long haul and will grow with your website.

10. Features and Limitations
Different website will have different needs from web hosting provider. A simple personal blog will require far less RAM, processing power, storage, bandwidth and security than an e-commerce website. From my past experience, some hosting provider just didn’t meet technical requirement as my website grew. A bigger website will need more service such as storage, speed, email, support. Thus, make sure you choose a hosting provider that can grow with your website.

Even the most basic plan in HostGator or BlueHost, are able to handle traffic of 200,000 people visist daily, all with a well-optmized WordPress blog and cache plugin.

How You Can Get A Backlink From Wikipedia and Boost Your Traffic (Step-by-Step Guide)

Wikipedia is a free online encyclopedia, created and edited by volunteers around the world and hosted by the Wikimedia Foundation. It allow anyone to edit articles. However, there are editor that reserve the right to remove or edit the content. Wikipedia is owned by the nonprofit Wikimedia Foundation.

Wikipedia was launched on January, 2001. Since then, it grew into the largest and the most popular general reference work on the Internet, and currently ranked the fifth-most popular website. Wikipedia has a great reputation. It is seen as the knowledge authority website of the world.

Although links from Wikipedia are nofollow links, but getting them is still very important. Since search engines evaluate your site based on many metrics, even including social media shares. Nofollow link will not bring you any of that delicious link juice you need for SEO, but it can still impact your website’s SEO positively because the search engine will see you got external backlink from a very respectable authority site like Wikipedia.

Wikipedia reviewers are pretty strict about who they backlink to. Therefore, if Google see you have backlink from Wikipedia, even you won’t get any link juice, but they still consider you the subject expert in this matter.

A backlink from Wikipedia will also bring you additional traffic each day. The volume of traffic really depends on which topic or which Wikipedia page that link is from. For a popular page on Wikipedia, the link can bring to the external website new visitors in the tens or hundreds of thousands. But for a lonely small Wikipedia page without much of traffic to begin with, it won’t bring much new visitors from the outbound link.

Either way, the new visitors you got from the Wikipedia backlink will immediately assume you are the authority of the subject. This boosts up your reputation and will lead to many new backlinks in the long-run.

Here is how you can get link from Wikipedia. You also need to follow this instruction to pass the editor’s review.

Get the tool WikiGrabber. Enter your keyword in it and you will find all the relevant Wikipedia pages that has those dead links. Or you can look it up in Google, by searching for “ Site:Wikipedia.org (enter your niche here) dead link.
Example, if your keyword is “bitcoin”, then your search should look like this:
Site:Wikipedia.org bit coin dead link

Go to the pages from your result. Locate the dead link by “Ctrl + F” and lookup the actual link
One you found it, now you can remove the dead link and insert a new link to your website.
Make sure the page you are linking to on your website has similar information as the original link. If you don’t have any similar information already available on your website, I am afraid you will have to start a new page on your website from scratch.
You can found out what the original page was like by looking up the dead URL in archive.org. This website stores the content of all URL on the web, even if that page is no longer available. Now all you need to do is create a similar content in your website as well.

What you just did improves Wikipedia because you replaced one of their dead link with a functional link, you also improved your own website brand authority and traffic volume.

If done correctly, even the manual review by Wikipedia editor won’t remove your link.
Lastly, I want to remind you that Wikipedia can track your IP address. A few new link is alright, but they can remove all your links if you use this method too excessively.

SEO is the name of the game. Of course you want to deploy good SEO tactics and rank your website higher in the search engine. There are other tactics we can deploy. Check out those links below. Top 12 On-Page SEO Techniques that Will Boost Your Ranking Now!

Onsite SEO or On-page SEO, is the process of making your website search engine friendly to achieve higher ranking in the search engine result page (SERP). In layman’s term, it is the process of tweaking certain elements on your page, so that your web page will be ranked higher in search engines’ index.
Optimizing or fixing issues related to on-page SEO will have huge effect on ranking and traffic, when user look up keywords in your niche in search engine like Google. Therefore, understanding ways to best optimized your website for those search engine, will determine how successful you website will be in the long run!
Over the years, I’ve developed my own set of proven methods to rank my pages higher in search engines. Here, I am going to share with you my top 12 techniques for SEO.

1). Meta description:

Meta description is what search engines use to assess what topic your webpage is about. Keep the description concise – less than 160 is preferred.
No need to insert your keywords here. It is best to use synonyms or Latent Semantic Indexing (LSI) of your keywords in the Meta description to get higher ranking in the SERP.
An easy way to find synonyms phrase or LSI, is to look at the bottom of the search page for related keyword or use Google Suggest.

2) URL Structure

Universal Resource Locator (URL) is the address of your webpage. Please remember, change your URL will cause that page to lose all its backlinks.

Since you can manually change the URL of every page on your website, make sure to optimize your URL for search engines. Some authority website use the name of category before the name of the post. Other website simply used the main keywords the article is about.
It is important to keep URL to 3-5 keywords, separated by hyphen.

3). Crawl Error Resolution:
SEO process is a continuous improving process. Crawl bots could discover errors when crawling your page and send that information back to Google. You can check your error report at Search Console (formerly known as Google Webmaster Tools), and click on Health tab, then Crawl Errors.

Now knowing what the errors, you can look up the proper resolution procedures for each type of errors.

4. Blog Post Title
Keep it under 65 characters. Keep it attractive and interesting. Since a good title (H1) tag will attract more visitors to your page, the more clicks you have the higher it will rank in the search result page. Remeber, use H1 tag once and only for the title. Do not use H1 tag again in the same post. Also, try to include the keyword in the H1 title tag of course.

5. Heading Modifier
Try to include the keyword. Try to add title modifier, such as “2018”, “top”, “guide”, “best”, and “review”. This method can help you rank higher for long tail keywords.

6. H2 and H3 subheading tags
H2 and H3 tags to break down the sections. Again, try to include the keywords.

7. Keyword Placement
Include your main keyword in the first paragraph or first 100 words. Also include it in the last paragraph.

8. Images and Videos
Name the image with your keyword. This help your blog from image searches. Also, images creates engagement and make the readers stick around on your website longer, which is beneficial for search engine ranking as well. The same goes for video media as well. They will creates even longer engagement and dwell time. But keep in mind, too may HD images and videos will slow down your website, which will hurt your SEO effort.

9. Internal Linking
Insert links in you post that link to other post in your blog. This is called internal linking or interlinking.
This is an important optimization technique, because it will allow your reader spend more time on your blog and read more pages. In addition, this technique also passes the link juice to the posts it links to. Make sure the interlinked posts are relevant and don’t over do it.

10. External Linking
You should also link to external trustworthy websites. If you aren’t too sure how legitimate they are, just use the nofollow tag for that backlink. External link also shows Google you are generous.

11. Word Count in Each Post
Try to make your post at least 500 words long. Otherwise, Google see it as less informative.
Longer posts or pages rank better, also because there are more contents and more information on the page for the search engine to pick up on.
Needless to say, you should still try to create good content, instead of just focusing on the word count.

12. Boost Site Speed
Google mentioned loading speed is an important factor in its SEO ranking algorithm. The download and upload speed of your website will affect user experience as well. The popular industry blog Munch Web, did a study and found over 3 quarter of visitors will not re-visit you website if it takes longer than 4 seconds to load. This patience is actually even thinner for the young generation who are visiting your website via their mobile devices.

Yes, site speed is crucial to your website’s success. Most people boost the speed by switching a faster web hosting provider and trade up their service package. You can also boost it by using a Content Delivery Network (CDN), but it will costs you more fees and time each month. A cheaper and less technical technique to boost your site speed is to compress all the images and videos on your website. You will be surprised to see the result.

Summary

It is still important to create high quality content that reader want to read and backlink to. Remember, Google and other search engines also consider many other off-page factors such domain age, backlinks, link relevancy, and social media engagement (shares, retweet, follows, likes and etc). The blog BrightEdge found that social sharing buttons can increase social sharing by 700%! Of course all these practices will bring you extra traffic too. The landscape of SEO industry is constantly changing, it is important to keep learning and stay on top of the trend and the SERP.
